Shoes and Orthotics

Sometimes our bodies need a little extra support, protection or control to assist our muscles and bone structures to line up so we can move better. This is where NovitaTech’s orthotics and clinicians can assist. We fabricate a broad range of orthotic devices to help in supporting or correcting certain muscles and bone structures. Our orthotics team will work closely with you, your child and others in your support team such as family members and physiotherapists, to meet individual needs and maximise support and function using the latest 3D technology.

When our muscles and bone structures require extra support so that we’re able to move about better, an externally applied device can do that job. A common example is foot orthotics that are often used in shoes for people with flat feet. You might have also heard of splints, walking boots, ankle-foot orthoses. There are lots of different types of orthotics which are made exactly to measure to suit each person’s body and needs.

These include:

Foot orthotics – Specially designed shoe inserts that help support the feet and improve foot posture. They can be rigid or soft, and they can be custom-made or fitted. Also, the orthotic device can come in the form of an actual shoe.

Ankle-Foot Orthotics – Also referred to as AFOs, they are an L-shaped brace that is worn on the lower leg and foot to support the ankle, hold the foot and ankle in the correct position and correct foot drop.

Hip-Knee-Ankle-Foot Orthotics – Called HKAFOs, these devices use bands, belts, pelvic girdles and knee-ankle orthotics to help position a person upright while centering the knee joint.

Knee-Ankle Foot Orthotics – Called KAFOs, these are an orthotic device which encompasses the foot to below the hip. KAFOs stabilise the knee, ankle and foot, allowing for proper function and movement. KAFOs are equipped with mechanically- or electrically-controlled hinges. They are useful when a child has limited movement in their legs so they can help when learning to walk.

Knee Orthotics – A brace that is worn to support and align the knee; it extends from above the knee to below it.

In addition, some shoes and supports are designed for orthotic support. These include:

  • Orthopedic shoes
  • Shoe modifications
  • Arch supports
  • Heel modifications
  • Cushioned heels
  • Extended heel
  • Heel elevation
  • Heel flares
  • Heel wedges
  • Inner sole excavation
